Horizon3.ai: Building Systems That Scale
Horizon3.ai is an autonomous cybersecurity platform that scaled from Series B through Series D during my tenure.
My Role: As the sole brand and web designer supporting a 15+ person marketing team and cross-functional stakeholders, I owned the brand end-to-end, from guidelines to governance, overseeing a Junior Designer for executional support.
01 // Design Challenge
Migrating a Bloated Website While Maintaining Business Continuity
The Problem
When I joined, the company had just ended an unsuccessful agency engagement that left them with a generic, bloated website on WP Engine using Divi Builder. The site was slow, difficult to update, and couldn’t support the content velocity the business needed. We were experiencing slow load times, mobile issues, and content discovery problems.
The marketing team needed to publish urgently, sometimes breaking CVE vulnerability pages had to go live in hours, outside business hours. But most content updates required designer/developer intervention because Divi was so cumbersome.
Constraints
- Business couldn't afford downtime, site had to stay live throughout migration
- Zero budget for external agency support, I had to do this myself
- No product roadmap visibility beyond current quarter (rapid pivots, new product lines launching)
- Content team had varying technical skills—needed self-service publishing without breaking things
- Performance was critical (site speed directly impacted SEO rankings and conversions)
- Responsive behavior, accessibility (WCAG), and dark mode all non-negotiable
My Decision & Solution
I made the call to migrate the entire site to Bricks Builder and rebuild everything from scratch. Bricks was the most lightweight, developer-friendly, modern builder I could find—prioritizing speed, modularity, and systems thinking. This wasn’t a reskin. Because of incompatibility between Divi and Bricks, every single page needed to be reconstructed. Post content could flow into new templates, but all templates had to be built fresh.
The critical strategic decision was designing at the component level first, not the page level. I built a library of self-contained, mix-and-match content blocks that could be assembled into any page type.
Execution
Migration Strategy:
Phased Rebuild: Created 3 rounds of release,
1. MVP components (AJAX content search, core templates, core web pages)
2. Expanded components (Content-specific templates, ancillary pages)
3. Nice-to-have components (advanced animations, interactive content features, quality-of-life content drafting upgrades to the backend)
Built in staging environment: Reconstructed the entire site in parallel without touching production
Tested with worst-case content: Long headlines vs. short, missing images, excessive copy, data-heavy technical content vs. executive messaging
Performance benchmarking: Tracked load times, mobile performance, and accessibility scores throughout rebuild
Component Library Improvments:
Standardized urgent/breaking news layout that could be published in hours. I was on-call to update these pages, with 2 backup personnel trained as fallback. Template had to accommodate layout variations (extra developer insights, variable product visuals, pre-released feature callouts).
Dynamic content filtering without page reloads for better UX
Calendar integration that updated events page listings automatically
Design Principles for Template Flexibility:
- Designed components with real constraints baked in: Tested every component with missing images, broken states, varying content lengths
- Built flexibility through variants, not infinite customization: Limited but intentional options prevented visual chaos
- Prioritized speed and accessibility over decorative animation: Performance was non-negotiable
- Responsive behavior and dark mode built into every component from the start
Outcome
Reduction in content publishing time and site speed improved by 40%+
Marketing could launch campaign pages, breaking CVE alerts, and new content independently without designer/developer support. The improved infrastructured allowed for easy implementation of react.js animations to add motion graphics directly in layout.
The system I built enabled the company to move at business velocity without compromising brand quality.
02 // Design Challenge
Empowering Non-Designers Without Sacrificing Brand Integrity
The Problem
The company was moving too fast for a single designer to produce every asset. Sales needed custom pitch decks. Events needed promotional graphics. Social media needed daily content. Partnerships needed co-branded materials.
If everything had to go through me, we’d either miss deadlines or I’d burn out. But if I just “gave people access to the brand,” we’d end up with visual chaos and off-brand content everywhere.
Constraints
- Team ranged from brand-savvy marketers to brand-oblivious business reps with zero design experience
- No budget to hire additional designers or outsource to agencies
- Multiple tools already in use (PowerPoint, Google Slides, various design apps)
- Needed to maintain brand consistency across multiple interwoven visual languages (core brand, NodeZero product, partnership programs, community programs, etc.)
- Some content was highly technical and required locked messaging (security claims, product capabilities)
My Decision & Solution
I made the strategic choice to meet users where they were rather than force everyone into designer tools.
Instead of giving the whole company Figma or Adobe access (which would have been a disaster), I implemented a multi-tier enablement system: Canva Enterprise for social/event graphics, Beautiful.ai for presentations, and a curated asset library on a shared drive. Each tool had different levels of guardrails based on user needs and risk.

Tool Selection & Strategic Reasoning
Canva Enterprise
Team already had experience with it, perfect for social graphics and event materials where some creative freedom was okay. Locked brand kit (approved colors, fonts only), curated stock photo library, custom illustration uploads.
Beautiful.ai
Smart-slide technology with fixed layout logic prevented bad design decisions. Built core presentation decks with locked foundational/technical slides, allowed users to “riff” by adding their own content slides within guardrails.
Shared Asset Drive
Organized library of logos, icons, patterns, approved photography, presentation templates, one-pagers—everything they might need without asking me.

Common Questions I Fielded
- Tool-specific learning curve issues ("How do I lock an element in Canva?")
- Use case guidance ("I need a one-pager for a partner event—where do I start?")
- Design choice validation ("Can you bless this before I send it?")—people would self-produce then ask for approval
Managing Off-Brand Drift
The biggest challenge came when generative AI tools exploded in popularity. Enthusiastic sales reps started using AI to generate all kinds of content—some off-brand, some using copyrighted imagery, some just visually inconsistent.
I developed AI Usage Guidelines with clear dos/don’ts and Mad Libs-style example prompts they could modify. This gave them creative freedom while keeping guardrails in place.
Outcome
Teams could self-serve for 80% of their needs.
Brand consistency improved because the guardrails prevented common mistakes. My team and I could focus on high-impact strategic work (campaigns, motion graphics, web design) instead of churning out slide decks and social posts.
