IANS: Humanizing a Cold Brand

IANS (Institute for Applied Network Security) is a research and advisory firm serving Fortune 500 CISOs. When I was hired, the brand felt cold and sterile— majority blue palette with cold blue icons, minimal imagery with mostly text that lacked hierarchy. I was brought on to bring more "life" to the brand and make it feel authentically human in an industry known for being serious and intense.

01 / The ChallengeS

Cybersecurity is a high-stress, intense industry solving serious problems with urgent consequences. IANS needed to differentiate in a crowded market by feeling more human, approachable, and like an extension of the client's team, a friend and support system, not just another vendor.

But how much "fun" can you push in an industry where mistakes have real consequences? Go too far and you lose credibility. Don't go far enough and you're just another cold, corporate cybersecurity brand. It's a delicate balance.

02 / The Strategic Approach

I started by asking: How do you make a cybersecurity brand feel human and approachable without undermining the serious expertise clients depend on?

Three Strategic Pillars:

1 / Authentic Over Polished

Show real people doing real work in their actual environments. Documentary photography over staged studio shots. Candid moments over corporate poses. Let the human side of cybersecurity be visible.

2 / Delight in Unexpected Places

Create moments of levity and connection through experiential design. Gifts that entertain, swag that references shared culture, experiences that make people smile. Bring warmth to a high-stress industry.

3 / Credibility Through Craft

Maintain professional excellence in execution. High-quality photography, thoughtful curation, strategic application. Personality without sacrificing the expertise and trust IANS was known for.

03 / The SolutionS

I made the decision to humanize the brand through authentic visual storytelling and experiential moments of delight rather than corporate polish.

Instead of stock photography or staged studio shots, we launched a documentary photography program capturing real cybersecurity practitioners in their actual work environments.

Documentary Photography Program

The Vision:

Capture candid, authentic moments of humans interacting with cybersecurity spaces. Show the kitsch-culture of how people decorate their desks and office spaces. Make the invisible work of cybersecurity visible and human.

Execution Strategy:
Ongoing series across 8-9 locations nationwide:
IANS clients and faculty members' offices
Photographer:
CMO who was also an award-winning photographer—invested in the outcome and experienced with documentary work
Remote art direction challenges:
Time zones made coordination difficult. Large RAW files required robust file transfer systems. Locations were unknown beforehand, so concrete planning was limited.
Pre-shoot preparation:
Created mood boards and conducted pre-shoot briefings around sizes and orientations of photos needed based on what assets they'd be applied to (web hero images, social posts, event graphics, print documents, presentations).
What We Were Looking For:
  • Candid moments over posed shots
  • Visually interesting spaces with personality
  • Authentic environmental portraits
  • The human side of cybersecurity—not just screens and server rooms

04 / The Impact

The brand transformation was dramatic. IANS went from cold and forgettable to warm, authentic, and human. The documentary photography became a differentiator in sales conversations, prospects commented on how the brand felt different from other cybersecurity vendors. The beer and swag generated buzz and conversation, even among skeptics. Most importantly, the brand now reflected the company's positioning as a trusted partner and extension of the client's team, not just another service provider.

Client feedback consistently highlighted the more approachable, authentic brand presence. The visual identity refresh supported stronger client relationships and differentiated IANS in a crowded advisory market.

05 / The Broader Application

This project reinforced a core principle that applies across industries: authenticity is a strategic advantage, especially in categories where everyone looks and sounds the same. When competitors default to cold corporate professionalism, showing genuine human personality becomes differentiation. The lessons from humanizing IANS extend beyond cybersecurity to any B2B brand struggling to balance expertise with approachability.
